As part of his artistic research, Martin Lang was interested in the way the Byôbu presents actions – but without continuing a direct narrative. This led him to questions such as: How are cities supplied today? What activities do people do today compared to the scenes depicted? And what might this look like in the future? He regarded the byôbu as a kind of “frozen moment” and made it visible in a virtual reality video work. In doing so, he also raised the question of how a community could be organized in the future – especially with regard to the people depicted on the screen. What would a byôbu look like from today’s perspective?
